Okay, the day finally arrived, it was time to stain! We used the B&Q Good Home Walnut satin stain for the entire room and it instructs application with a brush. Mason did a test patch (image 1) and it shows brush application on the left, cloth application on the right. We both said that we preferred the colour that the left option (brush application) gave so Mason started using a brush. However, when he stood back he realised that it was going patchy and leaving marks (the corner panel in image 6) so we decided that Mason will brush the stain on and I'd work behind him buffing the stain in with a microfibre cloth. This method was tough! You had to buff it in almost as quickly as its applied to avoid it drying and leaving patches. Naturally some areas of the wood took better to the stain than others but as it is a natural product that couldn't be helped.
These pictures show where we finished at the end of day 1. The drying time was advised to be around 4 hours so we decided to let it sit overnight and then make a judgement call on day 2 if we wanted to add a second coat or not.
